Some of the features of the direct-pay Blue Shield of California health plans for individuals and families include:
- Separate rate scales for in-network and out-of-network, but flexibility to use doctors and facilities near you.
- Ability to go to a network specialist without a referral.
- Choice of plans, including those with or without a deductible.
- Additional dental or life insurance coverage.
- Exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
- Maternity care not covered for six months after enrollment.
Individual plans include a range of deductibles and co-pays. Blue Shield of California also offers a high deductible plan for use with a health savings account and a short-term coverage plan. Because there is a waiting period before coverage begins, Blue Shield recommends a short term coverage plan until the regular plan is in effect. All plans are limited to residents of California who are not eligible for Medicare.
