Founded during the Great Depression, Kaiser Permanente began as a way to insure the thousands of men employed building the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Each worker joined a pool to pay a predetermined amount in order to be covered for work-related medical care. They also had the option to pay a little more to have all medical care covered. From the beginning, this company has emphasized preventive care and a close doctor patient relationship. At Kaiser, the patient is informed about all options for care and is encouraged to take an active role in medical decisions.
Kaiser is the largest non-profit, health maintenance organization (HMO) in the country. A Health Plan and a Medical Group manage the HMO in each region where Kaiser is available. Doctors are paid a salary by the Medical Group. The Kaiser HMO is an integrated health delivery system. The entire range of care for their members is provided and coordinated through their system.
