Affordable Health Insurance for the Uninsured

Faced with the increasing cost of health care and insurance, many Americans are just cutting out health coverage altogether. Currently, over 18% of Americans are uninsured, with over 80% coming from working families and 40% earning household incomes of over $50,000.

However, if you are currently uninsured, then you may potentially face a number of problems down the line – from having to pay expensive medical treatments up-front, to not getting the attentive care you need for a chronic illness. One-third of all uninsured people say they have trouble paying their medical bills and many eventually are turned over to collection agencies. But health care can be affordable. Here are four options that can keep you and your family covered:

1. COBRA Health Insurance

When you lose or quit a job with health insurance benefits, COBRA is the option many companies give you as a chance to buy their health insurance plan, albeit at a much higher price. From 2009-2010, the U.S. Government subsidized up to nine months of COBRA health insurance premiums for workers recently laid off. However, that assistance expired in May of 2010 and premium costs for consumers went up by 65% thereafter.

2. State Health Insurance Plans

State Health Insurance Plans (SHIP) programs vary greatly from state to state, but most offer an affordable insurance for the uninsured. Most states offer a range of low-cost government insurance programs, including for those who don’t qualify for Medicaid, those that recently lost their job, children and adolescents, veterans, low-income families, and more.

3. Short-Term Health Insurance

If uninsured temporarily, short-term health Insurance can be a great, affordable way to make sure you’re covered. You can buy it usually for six or twelve months and the premiums will be generally cheap because you’re paying only for coverage on unforeseen accidents or illnesses. You cannot qualify for short-term health insurance if you have a chronic illness or disease.

4. Affordable Group Health Insurance Plans

Similar to buying bulk at a grocery store, buying in a large group such as through an organized group or union can be far more affordable, perhaps even by hundreds of dollars, than buying individual insurance. This may be especially useful for freelance workers, such as writers and musicians.
